Sambo

Sambo is one of the most modern combat sports and draws on a number of different styles and techniques for inspiration. An explosive mix of Judo, Ju Jitsu and Wrestling, it has also incorporated many different fighting styles from Europe and Asia.

Sport
Sambo is stylistically similar to old time Catch wrestling and Judo, but with some differences in rules, protocol, and uniform. More akin to Catch wrestling, and in contrast with judo, Sambo allows various types of leg locks, while not allowing chokeholds.

Its disciplines include Combat Sambo, which includes extensive forms of striking and grappling, and the more modern development of Freestyle Sambo, which allows choke holds and other submissions that are not permitted elsewhere.

History
The pioneers of Sambo in the 1920s were Viktor Spiridonov and Vasili Oshchepkov who taught judo to elite Red Army forces at the Central Red Army House.

During World War II, the Sambo system was widely used by the Soviet Army.
The International Federation of Amateur Wrestling recognised Sambo as an international wrestling sport in 1966.

In 1985, the Federation International Amateur Sambo (FIAS) and the first World Sambo Championships were held in Tehran in 1973, and has been held annually since 1981.
