Ashgabat 2017 Photo Gallery and Daily Review: Day Eleven
The Iran men’s team put on a scintillating show of superb technical skills to win their fifth consecutive Futsal title, and three Indoor Tennis champions were decided in highlight action on the penultimate day of competition at the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games.
Day 11 also saw a rush of medals across Billiard Sports, Chess, DanceSport, Kickboxing, Sambo, and Wrestling, as six sports competitions came to an end.
Iran scored 58 goals through the tournament and produced their finest fast-twitch Futsal skills to win 7-1 in their gold medal match with Uzbekistan. It was a brilliant finale to a competition that started 11 days ago, before the Opening Ceremony.
The bronze went to Japan, which denied Afghanistan on a penalty shoot-out after a tightly fought contest. The brave Afghanistan team surprised many with its brilliant run in the tournament.
Perhaps this inspired their athletes over at the Main Indoor Arena, as Iran finished the Wrestling competition with a super show of strength.
Eight weight classes were contested on the final evening of the competition and Iran won gold in six of them. It finished top of the Wrestling medal table with 9 golds and 16 medals total.
Indonesian Beatrice Gumulya won the Indoor Tennis women’s Singles title, clinching a three-set victory after an epic two-and-a-half hour battle with her roommate and friend Aldila Sutjiadi.
There was an upset in the women’s Doubles final, where Thailand’s Tamachan Momkoonthod and Varunya Wongteanchai stunned India’s Prarthana Thombare and Ankita Raina, the No.1 seeds. It was another painful loss for Thombare, who had suffered a shock defeat in the mixed Doubles final on Monday.
In the men’s Doubles final, the top-seeded Indian pair Jagadeesan Vishnuvardhan and Vijay Natarajan beat Kazakhs Denis Yevseyev and Timur Khabibulin, as expected.
There was a brilliant triple gold for Korea at the Dancesport Arena, on the second and final day of the competition. With fans loving the atmosphere at the venue, Kang Munseong and Park Jisoo shimmied their way to double gold in Rumba and Cha-Cha-Cha, and teammates Nam Gi Yong and Shin Nara later snapped up the Jive title. China’s Yan Bangbang and Zhu Jing claimed the Paso Doble. Aleksei Kibkalo and Tatiana Kogadei won the Samba for Kyrgyzstan.
At the Billiard Sports Centre, China’s Chen Siming won the women’s 10-Ball Pool Singles, while Yzatbek Ratbekov won the men’s Russian Pyramid Combined Style Singles for Kyrgyzstan.
The fantastic eight-day competition came to a close, when Zhao Xintong claimed the gold for China in the men’s Singles. China topped the Billiard Sports medal table, winning five of the 12 gold.
Iran and Turkmeinstan took two gold medals each from the seven contested in Kickboxing. China, Kazakhstan and Iraq picked up one each. Iran’s Mahmoud Sattari won the heavyweight men’s Low Kick -81kg gold, and in the lone women’s contest of the day, China’s Li Yueyao took gold in the Low Kick -52kg.
The host Turkmen squad were denied a further pile of medals by their Central Asian rivals in the Sambo on Tuesday, taking just two from the seven contested. Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan picked up two each, and Uzbekistan one.
China took two of the four gold medals it contested in Chess on Tuesday, but the real grand champion of the Ashgabat 2017 Chess competition remains Le Quang Liem of Vietnam, who ruled in the men's Rapid Team event. Le had already won the men's Standard Individual event convincingly, and has been the best player here. In the women's Under-23 final, the Kazakh duo of Dinara Saduakassova and Zhansaya Abdumalik won gold, achieving what many expected.
