Islamic Republic of Iran’s Daneshvar Khorramn ready to set the pace
On day one of Track Cycling competition at the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games, one of the most eye-catching names on the entry list for the day’s men’s Team Sprint event is Mohammad Daneshvar Khorram.
The 23-year-old speed machine is the marquee rider for Turkmenistan's neighbour, the Islamic Republic of Iran, which has consistently been among Asia's best Track Cycling countries.
Iran is expected to fight for victory in every Track Cycling event at the Games and Daneshvar Khorram is a key rider.
He is the current Iranian champion in all three speed events featured on the Games schedule: Individual Sprint, Team Sprint and Keirin.
Daneshvar Khorram has also succeeded in international events, having claimed gold in the Keirin at the 2014 Asian Games at just 19 years old.
He is also the current Asian champion in the 1km individual time trial, which is not in the Ashgabat 2017 nor Olympic schedule, but it is still regarded the purest test of power.
Daneshvar Khorram lives in Mashhad, a city less than 70 kilometres from the Turkmenistan border.
“We did come here by bus,” the Iranian rider said. “I trained during the last few weeks in my city, along with the national team, and travelled on Wednesday. It took only a four-hour trip to make it to Ashgabat.”
The speed of the Ashgabat Velodrome has impressed him. “I have raced on a lot of wood tracks in the world and this is definitely one of the fastest,” he said.
No surprise what Daneshvar Khorram's goals are at the Games. “I want gold in all the speed events,” he said.
“But, of course, it won't be easy – every country has riders in good shape, who are willing to fight for the gold medals."
