Turkmenistan opened the Ju Jitsu competition – and the Ashgabat 2017 5th Indoor and Martial Arts Games – with a stunning six gold medals.
With three golds and four silvers in the Turkmen's specialty four weight classes of the Contact discipline, the host nation finished with 13 podium positions at the Martial Arts Arena.
Jelilmuhammet Hojamyradow and Myrat Gimmiyew started the medal haul in the morning by winning the men's Duo Classic and the Games' first gold for the host nation.
"It is the most exciting and happy moment in my life", said Hojamyradow, after being presented with the spoils of victory before joyous home fans.
When Gimmiyew and triple-medallist Patma Hojiyew ended the day with a Mixed Duo Show victory, Turkmenistan had won six golds, six silvers and one bronze.
However, Saturday's two most decorated athletes come from Thailand.
Kunsatri Kumsroi and Suphawadee Kaeosrasaen followed up their double Asian Championship titles from last month by winning gold in both the women's Duo Show and Duo Mixed, beating Turkmenistan teams in both finals.
"I am very happy because this gold medal was the first for the Thailand team here in Ashgabat," Kaeosrasaen said. "The Asian Championship wins gave us extra power and we were going to do all we could to defend this gold.
"But there was a lot of pressure today because we were fighting with Turkmen athletes. I had to try to forget about all the fans and find the concentration within myself to win."
It was an intense day for the Thai best friends, who split up to take silver and bronze respectively in the mixed Duo competitions.
"I have practised every day and trained in many different ways to be ready to compete in different disciplines during one day," Kaeosrasaen said.
The Ju Jitsu action continues on Monday 18 September and Tuesday 19 September with the Ne-Waza events.
