Signing up as a volunteer for the upcoming Ashgabat 2017 Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games has become a life changing experience for Archa Annabayev.

The 20-year-old had never previously left his home country before, but the chance of a lifetime to travel was presented to him after stepping forward two years ago to become one of the 8,000 First Stars, who will be the lifeblood for the multi-sport event which takes place from 17–27 September.

“I had a big desire to be a part of these Games because it is the first time that they will take place in our country,” said the third year student at the Turkmen State Institute of Transport and Communications.

“It has been an incredible experience since I signed up, but the highlight was travelling to Vietnam to work at the 2016 Asian Beach Games. I was sent by Turkmenistan as part of the Ashgabat 2017 volunteering programme.

“It was the first time I was overseas. I was there for 11 days. I went as an observer and I saw some sports that I have never seen before. It was really interesting.”

Born and raised in Ashgabat, Archa is the second youngest of four children and the only boy. He said his family is very proud of his accomplishments so far as a dedicated First Star.

“You have to manage everything,” he said. “You must solve any problems that could arise so you must do a lot of preparation.”

When it comes to the Games, Archa said: “In September, I will be ready to show off my skills.”

He believes that his experience during Ashgabat 2017 will be an asset as he prepares for a career in broadcasting and television.
