Turkmenistan’s Sambo wrestlers have warmed up nicely for the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games by winning 22 medals at the Asian Sambo Championships held in Tashkent over the weekend.

In what could prove to be a significant prelude to the big event being held in their capital city from 17-27 September, the Turkmen team won an impressive five gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals.

Lyale Nuryyeva won the country’s first gold on Day 1 of the three-day event in the women’s 72kg weight, and she was followed on Day 2 by golds for Gulbadam Babamuratova (women’s 52kg) and Kerimberdi Dovletov (men’s combat 62kg).

The winning streak continued through to the third and final day when Rushana Nurjavova clinched gold in the 56kg and Sapar Dovletov won the men’s 62kg weight.

The tournament ran alongside the Asian Youth and Junior Championships, during which Turkmenistan won a further two gold, nine silver, and six bronze medals.

All eyes now turn to Ashgabat 2017 with many of the 300 athletes who were competing this weekend in Tashkent expected to take part.

“The most important event this year is the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games,” said Turkmenistan sambist, Abdylla Babaev, who won bronze in the men’s 68kg combat event.

“The main thing now is to prepare for participation in this tournament.”

The Sambo events at the Ashgabat 2017 Games will be contested over three days from 24-26 September at the Martial Arts Arena.
