Turkmenistan’s 3X3 U18 side will return home with their heads held high following a promising debut at the 2017 FIBA U18 World Cup held in Chengdu, China.

With the small-sided version of Basketball being included in the 2020 Olympic programme, 3x3 basketball is enjoying a global popularity boom and will take centre stage at the 5th Asian and Martial Arts Games being held in Ashgabat from 17–27 September.

The young team consisted of Kerim Atayev (18y – 1.98m), Kemal Garabayev (18y – 1.75m), Annaguly Hojagulyyev (16y – 1.93m) and Yevgeniy Nazipov (16y – 185m), and while they didn’t manage to win any of their tough group matches, the Turkmen side pushed some of the world’s best teams to the limit.

Turkmenistan came close to cause a major surprise in their opening game against the Netherlands, before they fell 18-12 to the eventual silver medallists. In their other group matches Turkmenistan lost to Poland 21-16, Israel 17-7 and Asia’s best team, Philippines, 21-14.

The final was an all-Western European affair with Belgium beating their neighbours, Netherlands, 17-12. Slovenia edged out New Zealand 21-17 to claim bronze. The Philippines finished as the highest placed Asian nation in seventh, while China was ninth, Qatar 12th, Indonesia 14th, Bahrain 17th and Jordan 20th.

In the women’s competition, USA beat Czech Republic 21-14 to win gold. China finished seventh to be Asia’s best placed team with Kazakhstan in 12th, Japan 13th, Sri Lanka 19th and Singapore 20th.

The 3x3 Basketball tournament at Ashgabat 2017 will take place over seven days from 18–24 September at the 3x3 Basketball Arena.
