Turkmenistan’s medal total at the 4th Islamic Solidarity Games rose to seven as Seydylla Tazayev added a bronze in the Men’s Greco-Roman Wrestling (59kg).
The Turkmen athlete, competing in the lightest weight category at the Games, dispatched Turkey’s Mustafa Saglam in his opening bout, but lost out to Islomjon Bakhramov of Uzbekistan in the quarter-finals. After receiving a bye in the repechage round, Tazayev beat Pakistan’s Azhar Hussain to clinch the final step of the podium.
In the Greco-Roman 71kg category, Jeyhun Ovezdurdyyev bowed out in the first round against eventual silver medallist Ruslan Tsarev of Uzbekistan, before losing in the bronze medal match against Iraq’s Taha Al Salihi.
Turkmen athletes were also involved in the 80kg and 98kg categories: Amanaly Atayev made it to the semi-finals of the former before losing out to gold medal winner Yousef Ghaderian of Iran and bronze medallist, Turkey’s Burhan Akbudak; in the heavier category. Kyyas Esenov emerged victorious from his quarter final against Saudi Arabia’s Ali Binbakr Ghazi, but wasn’t able to edge past Uzur Dzhuzupbekov of Uzbekistan. The Turkmen missed out on a medal in the final match of his campaign, losing to Turkey’s Suleyman Demirci.
A place in the final for two Turkmen boxers
Yakub Meredov and Arslanbek Achilov will go into the final bouts of the Bantam (65kg) and Light Heavy (81kg) tournaments and will contend for the gold medal after winning their respective semi-finals. Meredov defeated Jordan’s Mohammad Alwadi on points and will face Abdulkhay Sharakhmatov of Uzbekistan in tomorrow’s final. A 5-0 decision on points brought Achilov’s victory over Cem Karlidag, with the Turkmen now set for a final showdown with Azerbaijan’s Rauf Rahimov.
Semi-finals the end of the road for competitors on track and in the pool
There was no qualification to the final for either of the Turkmen athletes involved in athletics and swimming today. Alisher Sadulayevwell finished seventh in the 200m semi-final, while, in the pool, Darya Semyonova finished in the same position in the Women’s 50m Freestyle.
Men’s Volleyball team’s need big win
A 3-0 defeat to Azerbaijan left the Turkmenistan Men’s Volleyball team on the brink of elimination. With one game left in the pool stage – against Pakistan on Friday – a big-score win is required in order to gain a bonus point.
In Taekwondo, Nurmyrat Berkeliyev’s journey in the men’s 68kg category ended at the round of 16 stage, following a defeat to Afghanistan’s Rohullah Nikpa; while on the tennis court, Yuriy Rogusskiy wasn’t able to replicate his heroics from the singles tournament in the first round of the doubles. Paired with Atlymyrat Gurbanov, they were defeated by Rasul Gojayev and Filip Nikolic of Azerbaijan.
Seydylla Tazayev’s bronze medal brings Turkmenistan’s total to seven – one gold, three silver and three bronze. The country now ranks 14th in the medal table. At the top, Turkey – with 54 gold, 45 silver and 38 bronze medals (total of 137) - has extended its gap over second-placed Azerbaijan (50, 29, 20 for a total of 99). Iran remains in third place with 54 medals, of which 14 are gold, 17 silver and 23 bronze.
