The Executive Committee for the organisation of the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games has today revealed details of test events that will be hosted in the Ashgabat Olympic Complex at the end of April.
The Senior Asian Weightlifting Championship, the Asian Kickboxing Confederation (WAKO ASIA) Championships 2016/2017, and the Central Asian Short Course Swimming Championships will all be taking place concurrently as part of the Inspiring Ashgabat Test Event Series.
Chairman of the 5th AIMAG Executive Committee, Dayanch Gulgeldiyev said: “It is a great honour to have two Asian Championships taking place in the Ashgabat Olympic Complex. These are very prestigious events which will set the bar very high for the Games in September. He then added: “This is the first time multiple venues will be operating simultaneously and it will be a great occasion for spectators to fully enjoy the Olympic Complex”
The Inspiring Ashgabat event concept incorporates the three individual events while representing the 5th AIMAG motto of Health. Inspiration. Friendship.
The Senior Asian Weightlifting Championships competition starts on 23 April and runs through to 29 April at the Weightlifting Arena. Athletes will compete for 144 medals which will be awarded for snatch, clean & jerk and total in each bodyweight category. Mr Mohamed Jaloud, General Secretary of Asian Weightlifting Federation commented: “We are delighted that the biggest event of our competition year will be taking place in Ashgabat. It is a great chance for athletes from all over Asia to familiarise with the venues and the city ahead of the Games in September.”
The Martial Arts Arena will host the Asian Kickboxing Confederation (WAKO ASIA) Championships 2016/2017 between 26–30 April with athletes from up to 20 countries expected to compete over the course of the five days. The competition includes 27 categories for men and 10 for women which will feature in the Ring and 28 categories for men and 16 for women on the Tatami. The event will see up to 354 medals awarded.
Mr. Nassiri, President of the Asian Kickboxing Confederation (WAKO ASIA) and Vice President of WAKO (IF) declared: “The Ashgabat Olympic Complex has outstanding facilities including the Martial Arts Arena, ready to host the biggest ever Asian Kickboxing Championships. We are expecting the best elite athletes from across Asia to be competing and we are expecting that the level of competition will be as high as ever."
In addition to these international competitions the Aquatics Federation of Turkmenistan have organised the first ever Central Asian Short Course Swimming Tournament which will consist of an invitational short course (25) competition in the new Indoor Aquatics Centre. Athletes from neighbouring countries Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan will be competing across a number of individual and relay events on 26–27 April 2017.
Mick Wright, Chief Operating Officer of the 5th AIMAG Executive Committee commented: “Having major international events taking place in the Ashgabat Olympic Complex is extremely important to test operational readiness for the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games by simulating Games-time operations”
“Test events are not only a key part of operational planning for us to be ready to deliver the best ever AIMAG, but they also represent a great opportunity for the people of Ashgabat to be able to see the Ashgabat Olympic Complex come to life. I am sure that Inspiring Ashgabat, will do just that, inspire the country even further and create additional excitement ahead of Ashgabat 2017.”
