Indoor Athletics

Few sports capture the all-round athletic power of Athletics with the human movements of running, jumping, throwing all used in their purest form.

Indoor Athletics was on the Asian Indoor Games programme between 2005 and 2009, and will return at the Ashgabat 2017 5th Asian Indoor & Martial Arts Games.

Sport
For Indoor Athletics, athletes compete in 13 track, field, combined and team events, including field events such as Long Jump, Triple Jump and High Jump; short, middle and long distance running and hurdles; and Shot Put, the only throwing event held indoors due to space restrictions.

History
Running and High Jump events were depicted as early as 2250 BC in ancient Egypt. Running and stone throwing events are also known to have been held as part of ancient Celtic festivals in Ireland around 1800 BC.

The original and only event at the first ancient Greek Olympic Games in 776 BCE was a stadium-length running event known as the Stadion. This later expanded to include throwing and jumping events.

In the modern era, Olympic-style competitions in running, jumping and throwing were held in France and England from the 17th century onwards. The first modern-style Indoor Athletics meetings were recorded in the 1860s. Athletics has been the core event of the modern Olympic Games since the inaugural Games in 1896 in Athens, Greece.

Separate outdoor World Championships were established in 1983 and Indoor World Championships in 1985.
